Iris says it is her duty, but the three plan to help Bracken themselves and take control of the war so that Lakeland can take control of Montfort and Norta. Then, Iris goes into a temple with her sister and mother where her mother tells Iris she does not have to return to Norta with Maven.

She believes they need Piedmont's alliance to win the war against Maven's brother, Cal. They group then travels into the city where Iris, whose marriage with Maven was political, tries to convince Maven to help Prince Bracken of Piedmont rescue his children from Montfort. When the boat docks, Iris' mother uses her power over water to pull their father's body to them where they bury it in the sea. Meanwhile in the capital of Lakeland, Iris waits for Maven and his soldiers to arrive with her father's body.

While they are happy he is not as brutal as Maven, they both wish Cal had more of his brother's insight and lack of trust. On the way back to the barracks, Mare meets Evangeline and both agree that Cal cannot have the throne. This ruins Evangeline's plans to stay behind with her true lover, Elane, and away from Cal, whom she despises for taking away her freedom by choosing the crown over Mare. However, Evangeline's father says that she will be going as well. After Mare announces that she will be going to Montfort with him, Evangeline goads Cal into agreeing to go with her. However, Davidson surprises them all when he says he must return to Montfort to ask the council for troops as Montfort is a democratic republic. They ask Davidson for soldiers from Montfort. They discuss Maven's retreat to Lakeland and know that his troops will heal there much faster than their own. Silver princess and Cal's newly betrothed Evangeline Samos is waiting with her family, Cal, and his grandmother Anabel. After a conversation about Cal's decision and the future of the rebellious Scarlet Guard who plan to take the crown from him, Farley and Mare head to the meeting place. Davidson, who is a representative of another kingdom known as Montfort, leaves to go speak with the newly formed council. Cal, Mare's former love, chooses to become the King of Norta instead of staying with her, which both angers and saddens Mare. Mare, Farley, and Davidson stand together in Corvium just minutes after an intense battle against the former king Maven. The following version of this book was used to create this leeson plan.
